The internet country is a wonderful and dangerous place at the same time. It has no central legislative or executive power that could enforce order. It, therefore, provides a good breeding ground for criminals who can act without being exposed. Moreover, while previously criminals had to be at the crime scene, nowadays they can execute cyber attacks from anywhere in the world, even from 150 countries at the same time. The purpose of these cyber attacks could be advertising fraud, which we discussed in a previous article.

At WebSummit, Brad Smith, a director of Microsoft, talked about the threats of rising cyber attacks and about how the elections of the greatest power of the world could have been hacked. Brad said that 90% of cyber attacks happened by clicking on emails. He thinks that this risk will never go completely away because of human nature; we, the team of Drive Online Marketing, however, try to mitigate this problem.

The first of our new Cyber Security blog article series seeks to assist you in how to recognize a phishing email.

First, it is important to understand the situation where most people become victims to phishing.

Two main scenarios exist:

  1. You get an email which mimics a service provider trusted by you (banks, bill-payment websites, social interfaces, email providers), but has not been sent by that service provider.
  2. This email offers a painless and immediate solution to a serious problem (cash winnings for poverty, an inheritance, a cure for an uncurable disease, rapid weight loss).

These emails always ask the recipient to provide confidential data, usernames, or passwords either by replying or by clicking on a link. If you look carefully at these emails, you can usually recognize that they are about fraud. You don’t recognize that only because you don’t look for flaws, as the email resembles so much the ones you are accustomed to.

How to recognize such mail?

  • Check the sender’s email address! It will never be identical to that of the service provider, but might contain its name.
  • Check the company logo! Typically, it isn’t identical to the company’s actual logo, it is only very similar to it.
  • Check the sender’s business name and address in the footer! Usually, they are not the same as those of the actual service provider.
  • Check whether the client ID in the email is an actual one. It is often false, but frauds often use identifiers with formats identical to the original ones.
  • Check the clickable link. This allows you to determine whether they lead to the website of the original service provider.

How to recognize a fraudulent website?

  • First, check whether the URL line is the same as the domain name of the real service provider.
  • Check whether the HTTPS authentication contains the business name of the service provider.
  • If the website wants to forward you to a card payment interface, then check the same elements there.
  • And, of course, keep checking the logos, business names, and addresses.

How to make sure that such emails are not false?

  • KEY RULE: never enter any username or password after clicking on an email link. Even if the website domain is the same as the one of the service provider.
  • Log in to the service provider by opening its website using a browser bookmark or the browser history. If the message is not false, then the service provider almost certainly indicates that in its own system as well.
  • Search the internet for the suspicious email address or domain to see whether anybody has already come across a similar problem.
  • Forward the suspicious email to the customer service of the service provider for investigation.

Finally, we would recommend a video with Brad Smith’s 2017 WebSummit talk.

We trust that this article helps to avoid cyber attacks.

Be prepared, as the Boy Scout motto goes!

An agency’s life. Part 1: Is it a service provider? No, it’s a Partner!

All relatively new fields in which we don’t have habits and patterns established over generations or guidance from our parents or teachers often have misconceptions and misunderstandings. Many still think that what online marketing agencies do is blurry hocus-pocus; expectations are…

An agency’s life. Part 3: Even Rome was not built in a day

Nowadays we think it is normal if you have money enough to pay for speed then you can get almost anything within minutes, hours or a few days at maximum. There are, however, things one cannot hurry to grow. It does not matter how…
